G.A. had lived at Jesus House before. In his struggle with addictions and a long life of broken and painful family relationships, Jesus House helped him tremendously in rediscovering himself and learning to hope again. He lived in many places after his last stay at Jesus House, but none seemed like home. His travels took him to Joplin, Missouri, where he found good work and a stable life in a small apartment. Then the unthinkable happened. On May 22, 2011, one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history struck Joplin and destroyed G.A.’s apartment. Everything he had was demolished and his cat was lost. He had to start over.
For G.A., there was only one place to go to safeguard his recovery from addiction, maintain some sense of mental stability and truly start over. Only one place has ever felt like home. G.A. gathered what little he had and returned to Oklahoma City’s Jesus House to start over again.
